Why Messy Play Matters: More Than Just a Big Clean-Up

If you’ve ever watched a child happily squishing paint between their fingers or pouring rice from one pot to another, you’ll know: messy play looks chaotic from the outside, but there’s a lot going on underneath the splatters.

Messy play is any activity that lets children explore with their senses. Think paint, foam, water, sand, slime, mud, rice, pasta and more. It’s open‑ended, child‑led and, yes… a bit messy! But behind every splash and squish, children are building important skills that will support them for life.
